Smell Good

USED TO BE, NOT TOO LONG AGO, THAT EVERYWHERE YOU’D TURN there were fragrant (sometimes overwhelmingly so) options for accessorizing our homes for our senses. Cloying candles, pungent potpourris, and linen and room sprays filled the air with artificial fragrances masking natural smells. Gasp. Choke. Cough.
But now one can practically smell the changes in the air. Companies like Mrs. Meyers produce freshly scented options employing natural ingredients. Stylish Archipelago Botanicals, credited by some as producing the original reed fragrance diffuser, inspired reinterpretations by everyone from Crabtree & Evelyn to the suppliers of Target. Leaders in all things natural like Aveda offer a subtle, black ceramic room fragrance diffuser (one giant step up from lightbulb rings of the last decade) that take a drop or two of natural oils to gently infuse one’s space with aromas true to nature.
And the good old match? Nothing beats lighting a simple wooden matchstick and gently wafting it through the bathroom, with its smoke naturally tackling any nasty lavatory odors. Check out Etsy for some imaginative ones by crafters.
Now breathe deeply.
