I grew-up eating pretty well. My mom was never one to feed us lots of meat and everyone in my family believed in eating lots of vegetables. We also didn’t do the sugary cereals, fast food, or sugary drinks. Of course, as I got older, I fell into the “fast food” crowd. I was pretty athletic and never really worried much about my weight. I carried my new found eating habits into college and into young adulthood, where I was less athletic and did worry about my weight. I toyed with being a vegetarian here and there and then fell into organic foods. You can’t really go wrong with organic and natural foods, most of the time. They taste just like “regular” foods. I think I even gotten my husband to eat some.
After getting married and living the fast life of a Publicist and entrepreneur, I added some bad habits of my own. My husband and I were no health nuts. Then, one day to our surprise, we found out we were pregnant. Besides being a massive shocker (we only wanted a dog, at best!), it meant a total lifestyle change for me. I decided one day that if I was going do this pregnancy thing I was going to do it 100%!!! I began eating healthier (ok, I became a bit obsessive) and really studying/researching the green lifestyle. I figured I should try to leave this planet in good condition for my kids and (gasp!) even my grandkids. Things went well and we have a super star little girl now.
But that was just the beginning….
Little did I know that the hard part was not going to be pregnancy, or even my own transformation, but the life after birth. I never knew that people, all though they mean well, will give you such a hard time about how you raise your kid! It isn’t like we are raising our daughter on a strict Kool-aid and Moon Pies diet…it’s just green! She drinks organic milk and very, very limited juice. We get her organic snacks, meals, etc. Then there’s the diaper issue. Oh my!!! Nobody wants to change cloth diapers. Not even the Happy Heiny’s or Thirsties kinds that are basically a cover with inserts. I asked a teacher at my child’s school what the policy was on using cloth training pants and she acted like I asked her to send a bar of gold home in my daughter’s bag everyday! And, we won’t even start on the grandparents, aunts, or uncles!
I started Luxe Green to help other parents, and individuals, who wanted to give the green life to their family while living in the “real world” of daycares, rice crispy treats, and soda. We have to unite and be one and fight for our children’s health, teeth, and our own sanity. I also strive to help those who may forgo the green lifestyle because they don’t know where to start, what to buy, etc.
We can do it!
