One of the most annoying questions I got from people in the first couple
months of Will's life was, "Is he a good baby?" Tons of people asked
me that. In fact, almost everyone who talked to me.
Is that just the question to ask? What does that mean? What does a baby have to do to be "good?"
Of course, every time someone asked me that I'd say, "Yes, he's
awesome." To which they would reply, "Oh, is he sleeping through the
night?"
Oh, is THAT what they mean by "good" baby?!! Because then I have a very bad baby...and he's still bad at 8 months.
Seriously, why do people think that a few week old, month old, or even
year old baby should be sleeping through the night?!! How many adults
even sleep through the night, every single night? How many adults are
never hungry or thirsty or have bad dreams or are in pain, causing them
to wake up in the night? How ridiculous is it to expect a tiny baby or
child to sleep though the night. Let me tell you - it's VERY
ridiculous. I know it's difficult when they wake up...believe me. But
it's CRAZY to expect them to sleep like a teenager.
I believe that all babies are good. There is nothing they do that makes
them bad. They cry, yes, but they have a reason to cry, and they
aren't able to take care of their own problems by themselves. They
depend on their parents to SURVIVE infancy. They depend on their
parents to help them fall asleep, eat, be clean and be comforted.
Babies ARE good. Period.
I have what a lot of people have called an "easy" baby. I have almost
felt pressured by other mothers to admit that I have an easy baby, and I
have admitted it. But lately, I'm resenting the fact that people
insist that I have an easy baby. I have a very
happy baby. That doesn't mean he's "easy."
