After a Parent Dies: Call for Submissions

My beloved mother passed away in December, and anyone who has experienced the death of a parent knows how hard that is. It's taken me this long to write about it, not only because of my grief over her passing but what has happened to my family. It has fallen apart, literally and figuratively. Not only have I lost my mother, but I am losing my father to dementia and Parkinson's, and at the same time losing my sibling — to greed. Everyone has heard horror stories about what happens when…See More

I'm tired of working; aren't you?

When I was younger, I wanted to be many things — a ballerina, until I suffered the humiliation of being the only one in the pre-performance picture who’d forgotten to spray-paint her black ballet slippers silver; an artist, until my parents refused to let me travel the subways to get to the prestigious art high school in Manhattan where I’d been accepted; an ecologist, until a year and a half into the environmental science program I realized I’d never be able to save the world; and a writer, or…See More

Can Disney revive the family sitcom?

Disney's newest TV offering "Good Luck Charlie," a live-action family sitcom, seeks to revive the time when families sat and watched TV together. I sure remember those days (and one was a Disney show, too, "The Wonderful World of Disney.") I chat with Leigh-Allyn Baker, who plays Amy Duncan, a mom of two teens and a tween who returns to work as a late-night shift nurse after giving birth to Charlie, a girl and a surprise. Baker…See More

Are moms unsung heroes?

When touting her recent movie “Motherhood,” actress Uma Thurman lumped all of us moms — single, widowed, divorced, choice, marriedand, presumably, teen — into the unsung hero category. "Motherhood is athing that can be terribly underappreciated. People are very willing toheap criticism on mothers," the mother of two said. “You don't hearthat much about the successes of mothers.” Indeed! After raising two boys for as long as I have — almost 20 years for the oldest, 16-plus for the youngest —…See More

Do special needs kids make marriage "impossible"?

Being married to someone is hard enough; add kids to the mix and you multiply the joy — and, yes, the challenges.Even the easiest kids add new things for a couple to argue about. What happens if the child isn't "easy" — like a kid with special needs.I chatted with Brazen Careerist Penelope Trunk who blogs honestly about her sons, one of whom has Asperger's (so does she). She says "It's nearly impossible to keep a…See More

Boss, I'm getting a divorce

It's never easy, talking about your divorce. It's hardest telling your kids, of course, but at least there are all sorts of experts to advise you on how to do it — and how not do it.Friends? Family? A little easier. Maybe. But when I was going through my divorce, there was just one person I didn’t know how to tell — my boss. Actually, it wasn’t that I struggled with how to tell her — I didn’t even…See More

One divorced family, one pink slip, two disasters

It shouldn't have been so shocking to me that my former husband recently lost his job — we’re both journalists, and even if the world at large wasn’t tanking, newspapers have been. It's kind of understood that for the few of us journalists still standing, it's just a matter of time. But as I thought about how his life was going to change and what that might mean to our two teens — one starting a culinary program in the spring, another two years away from graduating high school and with plans to…See More

Halloween, or Dress-Like-a-Whore Day?

It’s October, and so the Halloween decorations have taken over. So I was admiring the windows in some of the stores downtown, the pumpkins and witches and scarecrows, when I walked by the lingerie shop. Along with the lacy La Perla bras and Hanky Panky panties were some manikins wearing costumes — a French maid, a Marie Antoinette-like French getup (but with a lacy miniskirt), etc.

That’s often how we women dress on Halloween — we flaunt our sexuality, whether as a French maid or a… Continue

Why get married again?

If Elizabeth Gilbert did it again, why wouldn't all divorced/widowed women?

Marry again, that is.

The author of the best-selling memoir, "Eat, Pray, Love," eventually marries "that guy" she met in the "love" portion of the book. She details all in her about-to-be published book, "Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage."

But she marries him because she must — he's about to be deported for good.

Now, most of us don't marry a second time because… Continue

Want to be famous? Be like Levi Johnston and start blabbing

It would seem that Levi Johnston’s 15 minutes of fame would have come and gone by now. Once his would-be mother-in-law, Sarah Palin, lost her bid for vice president, you’d have expected that the somewhat hunky, hockey-playing, self-described “f-ing red neck” former boyfriend of Bristol Palin would have settled into his normal life in Wasalia, Alaska, doing whatever it is they do up there. After all, he’s not really famous for anything other than knocking up his teenage… Continue
