"I'm with you, Rosaura. But, so many people don't want to know. To know or not to know can both ways and it doesn't seem to matter if the baby will be your first or fourth or if you have all boys/all girls and want a child of the…"

Rosaura Hinojosa replied to Susan Newman's discussion Boy? Girl? Now you can choose, but should you?
"That is definitely a very personal decision. There are parents who like the uncertainty. They want to enjoy at the maximum the moment of birth. Personally I really liked to know the sex of my baby in advance and enjoy the last 3 months preparing my…"

Boy? Girl? Now you can choose, but should you?

Since the first "test tube" baby in the 1970s, reproductive technology has created a storm. The latest: the ability to know your baby's gender seven weeks after conception. Like egg donation, surrogacy, sperm donors, the idea of Boy? Girl? Now you can choose, but should you? is open to debate. What do you think?See More

"I think if this is an option to help a family have a child and money is standing in the way - then yes, I can see where some would choose to go this route!  Thanks for sharing - pretty interesting!"

Would you buy a lottery ticket to "win a baby?"

"Win a baby" is the sensationalized headline in England where the "To Hatch" Lottery is legal. One winner a month gets infertility treatments and consulation worth over $40,000 at one of the top five clincs in the UK. Read details at my blog on Psychology Today. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/singletons/201107/buy-lottery-ticket-win-baby Gambling on reproductivity?  Would you buy a ticket?See More

What do you think is the ideal family size?

In 1936 the Gallup poll started asking that very question. The response has been consistent: two children. However, what people say they want and what they do today is quite different. People think they know how many children they will have, but then are rocked into reality by infertility, costs, job constraints, and more. The traditional family has changed, but the brainwashing and pressure to have more than one child remains. How do you deal with the shame and guilt of not wanting or not being…See More

The Great Divide: Working Moms VS. Childless Women

As significant as the differences are between men and women in most workplaces, the biggest gap is between women with children and those without. Motherhood can be a considerable employment handicap…

Deep Down Are You Still a People-Pleaser?

For some people, saying yes, giving in to what is asked or wanted is a habit, even an addiction. Others, at times, just feel manipulated or taken advantage of, anger at the person who asked or upset with themselves for agreeing.

The research for my book, The Book of NO: 250 Ways to Say It-and Mean It and Stop People-Pleasing Forever, culminated in insights and tools that can help people-pleasers get off the yes-treadmill. Saying NO as so many… Continue

Stereotyping by Birth Order and Blood Type

In Japan, blood type establishes who you are these days. You are deemed sensitive, anxious, curious, or selfish according to blood type: A, O, B, or AB. That’s become common (and accepted) Japanese wisdom. Forget that this theory has no scientific basis. Nonetheless, it is the overarching determinant in all things from finding a compatible mate to finding a job.

Is adopting a belief in blood-type branding any more erroneous than deciding someone is conscientious, reticent, bossy or… Continue

Exploiting Sasha and Malia So Soon

Only a week in office and the concept that the First Daughters are “off-limits” has been challenged in a big way. It’s one thing to market President Obama action figures and puzzles; it’s another to draw on the names and likeness of his children without Obama approval.

Ty Inc. (who sold an estimated $6 billion in Beanie Babies) hopes to cash in on Sasha and Malia dolls. “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia” hit store shelves this month. Should the Obamas try to halt Ty’s distribution… Continue
