It Takes A Village: Does "Community Spirit" Still Exist?

I used to love this song when I was a child:Sesame Street was the "bee's knees" and this song rocked my world. Who were the people in my neighborhood? I wasn't sure but I knew I wanted to find out, at least that's what the song compelled me to do. Being a kid growing up watching Sesame Street along with the Electric Company, I listened intently to whatever the characters on these programs compelled me to do or think about. What they discussed was immediately interesting and intriguing, it was…See More

Hijacked at the Checkout

"That'll be $57.24, please. And would you like to donate to [INSERT CHARITY HERE]"Has this ever happened to you?If you are a regular grocery shopper, the answer is likely "yes." Increasingly, stores have taken to "guerrilla collection tactics" with regards to the charity of the hour. Ambushed is how I feel, quite frankly. http://bit.ly/n7gmc4See More

The Things We Do For Love: Parenting Style

Besides blogging, I actually have a real job. Hard to believe, but true. Venturing into the consulting realm, I needed a logo. Having a spouse who knew his way around graphics, it seemed to be a no-brainer.So I asked him to make me a logo. I had some ideas and passed them along in terms of what I wanted it to look like. Of course, my very curious seven-year-old overheard the whole thing. http://bit.ly/r410s1See More

Back on the Chain Gang: Should Kids Be Leashed?

We've all been there, right? We're out in public, with our kid (or kids) in tow, and suddenly he bolts for the road unexpectedly.Or how about those times where we innocently took Little Janie to the department store, looked down for a moment at that incredibly cute sweater, then turned around and our sweet little girl was gone?Yes, panic ensued. Yes, we did finally become reunited with our offspring, if not through the kindness of strangers, but through the bloodcurdling scream of our child's…See More

Meltdown in Aisle 5: Top 6 Tips For Keeping Your Kids Calm at the Supermarket

It's an inevitability that every parent has to experience. A rite of passage, the "supermarket shakedown" is one that indeed shakes your maternal/paternal resolve to the core. This unique meltdown of sorts is atypical in that it is usually precipitated by the perpetrator's viewing of candy-coated confections, promptly followed by an unequivocal "No!" http://bit.ly/pp9UhBSee More

The Parent Police Proclaim: "No Kids Allowed"

Backlash or hogwash? It depends who you ask.A recent decision by Malaysia Air to ban babies from first class caused quite the uproar amongst family advocates everywhere. After all, is it fair that those who choose to procreate be relegated to the equivalent of "steerage" when traveling by air? Perhaps a tad sensitive because of this announcement, parents this past…See More

Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better....

Perhaps it started way back when in the prehistoric annals of domesticity, the 1950's. If one went by the media and popular accounts of daily life that were portrayed at the time, women wanted to do nothing more than to keep a beautiful home and cook a wonderful meal. The name of the game was perfection and the holy grail was a sparkling kitchen floor and a husband's shirt that was devoid of the feared "ring around the collar." Apparently women enjoyed just being able to please their husbands…See More

City Slicker or Suburban Soccer Mom?

**Full disclosure: I live in the city, though I do envy my friends who have those cute, main floor powder rooms that you get in many suburban homes** It's like The Sharks and The Jets all over again. The warring camps have set up their fortresses, with the city limits as the unspoken dividing line between territories."Urban life cannot be replicated" state those who have a penchant for fresh lattes from the corner Starbucks on a lazy…See More

Playdate Pressures

"How about we plan a play date for the kids?"These words - stated often - have me quaking in my boots. The topic of play dates, get-togethers, or whatever you want to call them is one that all parents must deal with once their kids become of age. Actually, the average age for play dates seems to be rapidly decreasing in my estimation, but that is a whole other story. Apparently it is de rigeur to set up a mutually agreeable time for your child and his or her friend to rendezvous at each others…See More

The Creature From The Back Of The Fridge

The meal was "out of this world." That's why it was saved, presumably.

And indeed, it may have been heavenly in its original form, I'm sure; now? Not so much.

A science project, perhaps, a study in microbiology and the tenacity of bacteria. Mould is a very curious but fascinating thing, I'm embarrassed to admit.

Of what do I speak? Surely you know: the evil that lurks at the back of the fridge (contained in Tupperware, of course).…

Every Day is Boxing Day

Boxing Day used to be a high point for many of us parents. After a year of buying full-price retail items and perhaps getting some items on sale every so often, this one day of the year promised to relieve us from the financial strain of raising children in a modern world. Kids, after all, are expensive.

While the holidays proved to be a high point of the year, let's face it: getting a snowsuit or new running shoes for our children at 60 per cent off was almost too much to…
