Why Moms Are Better At Sports

Gender issues are always a part of staying home with children and especially so if you are a man.  But one thing, especially since I have two boys, I've always looked forward to and dreamt about is teaching them sports.  I was never excellent at any one sport, but athletic enough that I could play just about any sport on a pick up game level. I played soccer, baseball and wrestled growing up, but if a bunch of guys were playing football or basketball I could jump in and play. Not with guys on…See More

Seven Dirty Words For Kids

One of the problems with staying home with the kids is the lack of adult interaction.  And one of the ways this manifests itself is a lack of social decorum, since basically there is no social construct in place.  For a few years it was just me and a couple of smelly, poopy, screaming boys running around the house. While this may or may not sound like your work, at least at your work, these smelly, poopy, screaming people are presumably adults and that at least reminds you to mind your manners…See More

Video Blog aka Shopping With Bob ButterBottom

Yes dear readers, its a video blog.  Instead of teaching you how to fold fitted sheets (or Laura showing you), I'm taking you with me to go shopping at the craft store Michaels.  Of the many levels of ButterBottom hell, Michaels definitely has one of them all to itself.I think I've gone to Michaels maybe 5 or 6 times in my life and come away empty handed every time.  It is…See More

Who Wants A 'Special Hug'?

One of my favorite sayings is the one about 'its better to be lucky than good'.   Closely tied to that would be ' your hard work makes good luck' or something along those lines.  Well, I'm either very good or very lucky, or somewhere in between, because I nearly got caught with my pants down on one of those HUGE questions kids can ask. While returning home from a really poorly executed Muppets Movie (who thought waiting 30 minutes to show Kermit the Frog was a good idea?), Turner piped up from…See More

A Small Town's Secret Weapon

There's a long running debate about living in a big city vs. living in a small town or the burbs.  Big cities have all the culture, the suburbs have big back yards.  Big cities have a more diverse ethnicity, small towns have lower crime rates, etc...Having lived in big cities for 12 or 13 years, but spent the last 8 in a small town, I can say the biggest thing we miss isn't necessarily the food, but the lack of food delivery available. You really can get any kind of food in the world delivered…See More

Meet The (Other) Woman Who Makes My Life Great

As most of my readers know, my wife is the bees knees.  But I can only take care of her while she's at home.  Luckily, her Associate Director at work also happens to be the bees knees.  And she makes Laura's life a million times better at work.  Which then makes MY life a million times better at home.  It really makes a world of difference if your spouse gets along with their co-workers.  You will never get along with everyone, but if you are tight with someone on your team it can go a long…See More

The Breakfast Club In The Blog World

Recently, life in the blogger world has reminded me of the classic John Hughes film The Breakfast Club.  If you are over, I don't know, 30 and haven't seen it, rent it, it's a classic.  Under 30, who knows and you probably aren't reading my blog anyway. One of the two or three best comedies in the 80's.Two of the themes or takeaways from the film seem very appropriate for the blog…See More
