We're way more fun than those other parents.

This week was Theme Week at Ryan's daycare. You remember these weeks from when you were in high school. School spirit day, funny hat day, twin day. I never was much into them, but somehow it's much funnier to participate when your kid is just shy of seven months old.We were particularly excited for Monday. Crazy Hair Day. It's amazing what a little Aveeno Baby Moisturizer can do. We…See More

I don't know why he's crying.

I've read all about how babies have different cries. One cry - maybe it sounds like "eeeeaaaahhhhh" - means the baby is hungry; another cry - "aaahheeeahhheeeahhh" - means the baby is tired.I have studied Ryan's cries for six months now. I have listened to him when he's hungry. I've comforted him when he's had some bad, bad milk. I've watched him turn the sudden corner from playing and having fun to…See More

My kid has a weird sense of humor.

Ryan doesn't laugh a whole lot. He's a happy baby; he smiles an almost annoyingly large amount of the time. He thinks pretty much everything is at least semi-amusing. But very few things make him actually laugh out loud. But the stuff that has made him laugh? Not really all that funny, if you ask me. I'm starting to worry that his sense of humor might be a bit off. Here is a sampling of recently "funny" events:1. Fake coughing. Is hysterical. Evidently.2. When I ask him to say "Mama." It is the…See More

I play with my kid's toys.

I don't mean that I play with my kid's toys with my kid. I do that, yeah. But sometimes, I also play with his toys when he's not around.I have a "just in case" toy in my car. It's been in there since one particularly fussy drive home from daycare when my car was glaringly void of all binkies, toys, blankets, anything to occupy him. It's a little blue mouse with red ears and a see-through belly that is filled with tiny colorful balls that rattle about.Ok, it sounds weird, but it's cute. And Ryan…See More

Getting the group photograph of four young kids.

I have three really awesome nieces. Cara is four and a half and is sort of tomboyish. She isn't the type of girl to dress up like a princess for Halloween - she'd rather be Yoda. She's into all things planets and outer space, and she has a list of things she would take on a trip to Saturn (juice boxes, a sweater in case it gets cold, etc).Kaitlyn is two and is a girly girl. She loves to dress up in hats and sunglasses and tells me my scarves and jewelry are pretty. Clearly a girl after my own…See More

It's hard to reason with a baby.

I've always said that the one thing that is so frustrating about my cat is that no matter how old she gets, I will never be able to reason with her.Oh, how I wish I could explain to Belle that if she didn't eat ALL of her food in four seconds, she wouldn't throw it up. Or that she can sit outside my bedroom door and meow for FIVE straight hours if she wants to, but she's NOT coming in because she can't be trusted on carpet. At least with kids, they'll probably understand you at some point.…See More

A little head bump is OK if he doesn't cry, right?

I shouldn't be glad he hit the baby's head against the stove.Maybe glad isn't the right word. Smug might be more like it.We give Ryan his baths on the kitchen counter, you see. We do this because my back cannot handle the low tub with the high side. I tried it a few times and spent all of bath time trying to figure out how to get even the tiniest bit comfortable. I can't say for certain that any soap actually touched the kid's body because I was so preoccupied with where to put my legs. So, the…See More

My days (and nights) are a little busier.

I always seem to be busy lately. I was always sort of busy Pre-Kid, but now on most days I feel like I'm in the eye of a storm. I'm thinking about the next three tasks while completing the current task. I'm constantly moving, constantly sorting another load of laundry, searching for a binky, folding a blanket, tossing a toy into a basket.I keep waiting for things to slow down. And then last night it hit me: It's not going to slow down. Not for another 18 years. And maybe not even then."Remember…See More

I am shunning my To Do List.

Pre-Ryan, I was very organized. Almost to a fault. My planner was full of meeting dates, deadlines, birthday and anniversary reminders, account information (written in code, of course), and a spreadsheet of which bills are due when.A friend once told me I am "like, prepared for life." I took that as a compliment. Then I had a kid.And I no longer care.In fact, it's March, and I have yet to write a single birthday down in my planner. This almost guarantees that I will forget one this year.I have…See More

I'm excited. About Seuss.

Before I became a mom, certain things excited me. An upcoming trip. A three-day weekend. Dinner at a favorite restaurant or drinks at a favorite Irish Pub. New jewelry.* Home improvement projects. Now? Now I get excited about a birthday party for Dr. Seuss at my kid's daycare. The kids wore PJs all day and read books. When I first got the note from the daycare with the details, I scoffed a bit. Dress him in PJs? The kid is five months old. He always wears PJs. And he doesn't know Dr. Seuss from…See More

I'm someone's mom.

You know what's a strange thing? To start referring to yourself as someone's mom.I've been a lot of things in my life. A daughter, a sister, a friend. I've been a student. A baker. A reporter. A wife.I fell into all of those roles fairly easily. There has been a slight thrill with the newness of each one. After four years of college, to finally call myself a real, genuine reporter was exciting. Like I was finally legitimate. And to check out of the resort two days after I was married and…See More

Maybe I need a lighter kid.

We made a big switch over the weekend. We ditched the infant car seat and now use convertible car seats.

The big difference is that the convertible seat stays in the car. It's not a "carrier" like the infant seat was. Ryan was going to outgrow the infant carrier in like 10 minutes. Plus, I just could not carry him in that thing any more. Twenty pounds of baby + 5 pounds of car seat + total awkward bulkiness + the need to carry 9 million other… Continue

Green eyes.

I am blogging to get a song out of my head.

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? I can't stand it. Whenever Mike wants to annoy me, he sings "Little Willy" by The Sweet, which he knows gets stuck in my head like whoa.

But for once, that's not stuck. Instead, "Green Eyes" from Coldplay has taken up permanent residence during the past four days.

See, when I was pregnant, I always wondered what color…
