A Lesson From Penn State

The recent sex abuse scandal that has rocked Penn State should not come as such a shock.  There have been so many other well-publicized sex abuse scandals at schools, camps, and athletic programs across the U.S.  It's the "old boys club" mentality that perpetuates pedophilia.  When are we, as a society, going to get it into our heads that our sons are just as vulnerable as our daughters?  Pedophiles don't engage in abuse only for sexual gratification: they want control.  And who is easier to…See More

Is Herman Cain The GOP's Great Black Hope?

Is it just me, or is the GOP trying to set up the great Black showdown for the 2012 election?  Since President Obama secured his seat as the Democratic presidential candidate in 2008, the GOP has been searching for a person of color to pit him against.  First it was Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, who the GOP  thought would be the perfect running mate for Senator John McCain.  The GOP hoped that the young Jindal would help secure the Asian-American vote and perhaps appeal to…See More

Young Girls And Makeup: Too Cute or Too Grown?

At what age would you allow your daughter to wear makeup?  For most moms, this question can be a source of conflict between them and their adolescent daughters.  An argument can be made that young girls wearing makeup may attract the attention of boys and indicate that these girls are trying to be too grown up.  While I understand these fears and concerns, I have a different take on this issue.  To me, wearing makeup at a young age is not necessarily taboo.  Makeup, like clothes and hair, is a…See More

Customer Service Reinvented: Jet Blue

Like many of you, I always gripe about poor customer service.  Who can blame me?  As far as I was concerned, most companies had no customer service whatsoever.  With companies outsourcing their customer care to foreign companies, whose employees are often unhelpful due to language barriers, consumers, I felt, were  justified in their conclusion that good customer service was a thing of the past.  Try calling your cable company or your credit card company.  You’re likely to have a disappointing…See More

Confessions of a Mom: My Children's Addiction

Yes, I am embarrassed to admit that my three children are suffering from an addiction.  I've tried time and time again to wean them, but they just refuse to change.  There are days that I get so frustrated that I even wrote a post entitled "Why Infertility Can Be a Blessing?" It's so sad.  I often wonder where I went wrong.Let's see, it all started back in 2004 when my daughter, Zaharah, got her first gaming device: a Game Boy.  Shortly thereafter, her brother Arshad got a Game Boy Advance. …See More

Honoring 9-11

Today marks the 10th anniversary of  the most tragic day in American history.  A day when more than 3,000 Americans lost their lives due the actions of Islamist extremist.  After the attacks, I thought that I would  see a better America, a nation where we all stand together as one, as in the motto E pluribus unum, "out of many, one."  But I haven't.  What I see is a country divided, one in which we are now suspicious of our brothers and sisters, one that is racially…
