Swimsuit shopping: A special kind of torture

I've never enjoyed shopping for a swimming suit, but now that my 13-year-old daughter is suffering the same indignity, it's much worse. How about you? How do you weather this rite of summer? Here's my blog about it. Share your story! Kate Beemhttp://momonthedge.comSee More

"That sounds like a good idea. I have no idea when they will be able to get back into their homes. Some people were probably able to take some things; they started evacuating before the weekend. But I don't know if they were able to take…"

A moral dilemma: Hurting one group of people to save another

My heart is heavy. The place where I grew up -- Mississippi County, Mo. -- has been intentionally flooded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They blew a two-mile hole in a levee, and people's homes and farms are now covered by water. I blogged about it here. I just wanted to share and ask everyone to send good thoughts their way... See More

The Pinewood Derby: Just another chance for your kid to be disappointed

Oy, I'm glad this year's Pinewood Derby in my younger son's Cub Scout pack is over. Once again, the pressure and nervousness leading up to the event nearly did me in. (And my son was anxious, too.) I blogged about it here. Tell me what you think. Is the Pinewood Derby a big deal in your house? http://momonthedge.comSee More

Staph infection -- very scary to live through

A couple weeks back I spent a week in the hospital with a staph infection. I blogged about it here. (I also had influenza B at the same time.) It wasn't MRSA, either. It was MSSA -- methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus. It's not quite as virulent as MRSA, but the docs treated it the same. I came home from the hospital with a PICC line in my arm and a bunch of IV antibiotics, which I've been infusing myself with ever since. Now I'm…See More

Valentine's Day: Love it or leave it?

My hubs and I don't observe Valentine's Day too much. Our track record with the holiday isn't too whippy. I blogged about it here. How about you? Is this a big holiday for you? http://momonthedge.com  See More

Vicariously living hurts

I'm the parent of a 13-year-old girl, and as she moves through the middle-school years, it's painful. Not just for her, but for me, too. I've already lived this and know you can come out unscathed on the other side, but watching my sweet girl weather the woes hurts. I blogged about it here. What do you think? Any advice? Kate Beemhttp://momonthedge.com See More

Get thee some Purell

I'm worried about H1N1, but I'm more worried that fear will cause us to stop our lives AND teach our kids to be afraid.

I'm the mom soccer moms love to hate

I support my kids in their sporting endeavors by getting them to practice and coming for the games. But I don't stay for practice and won't rearrange the family schedule so my 12-year-old can play 25 basketball games between November and February. Is that unreasonable?

Guiding Light got snuffed. Was it my fault?

"Guiding Light," the longest-running soap opera in TV history at 72 years old, signs off forever on Friday. I wax nostalgic:
