Most U.S. History courses from elementary to high school will cover a study of the original 13 colonies. When studying History (any History) it is important for students to master 5 skills:
1. Chronological Thinking
2. Historical Comprehension
3. Historical Analysis and Interpretation
4. Historical Research Capabilities
5. Historical Issues-Analysis and Decision-Making
There are a variety of methods that may be chosen to aid students in developing these skills and one of those is notebooking. Notebooking is simply a method in which a child must gather information, think about that information, decide how to best present the information and then create a portfolio notebook displaying the information and what has been learned in the process.
I decided to create this unit (13 Colonies) as my first Notebooking through History project for two reasons:
1. Most U.S. History courses cover the topic
2. Courses typically cover the topic at the beginning of the school year
Preview Notebooking through History: 13 Colonies
Included in this 36 page download are 9 maps to use throughout, 2 timelines, and multiple notebooking pages for students to use as they create their notebook.
Once you've previewed the notebooking pages and you've decided you'd like to download it, click here to go Available Downloads (The download link will # 19 under Notebooking, Lapbooking and Unit Studies.)
One great download to use in conjunction with these notebooking pages is: Story of the 13 Colonies
If you would like to supplement any study of the 13 Colonies, here are some you may want to consider looking for at your local library:

I am a tutor, hoomeschool workshop leader, curriculum developer and homeschool vendor. We have curriculum disguised as a game that teaches: Phonics, reading (14 early reader books included), phonic blends, basic Spanish (French and any language that uses the English alphabet), spelling, vocabulary, language arts all in one curriculum. We also have lots of free lesson plans.
