CPR. A lifesaving action.

When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends greatly on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, less than 1/3 of those people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location get that help. Most bystanders are worried that they might do something wrong or make things worse. That’s why the AHA has simplified things.

Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help.

It’s not normal to see an adult suddenly collapse, but if you do, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Don’t be afraid. Your actions can only help. Increasing the number of people who know about Hands-Only CPR will increase the chance that someone can help when an adult suddenly collapses, and more lives can be saved.

I'm all for spreading the message of hands only CPR for the general public, but if you are a mom with an infant or toddler, you really should learn the traditional CPR with breaths.  If you have to use CPR for someone very young it's often because of a breathing emergency: drowning, asthma, severe allergy -- so getting oxygen into that little body immediately is critical.  If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area I highly recommend the teachers at In Home CPR who will come to your home to teach you everything you need to know about CPR and first aid.  http://www.inhomecpr.com

I'd love to put more info up on my blog. I'm wondering if you have any video or other information that I can copy and post up? Thanks :)

as a nanny ive taken cpr many times and, of course full cpr (with breaths) is always best. but I respect the call to do something when you see someone collapse, and not just stand there! :) i carry a cpr mouth shield with me everywhere I go so if I need to do full cpr on a stranger I can do so without question.

AHA, you may wish to comment on this poorly-written story that confuses "heart attack" with "cardiac arrest." Embarrassing to see this put out there by my alma mater: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1228280/Why-kiss-life-act...
