hello fellow geek moms--I'm compiling a list of "geeky" things to do with your kids for my blog--My son is 3 so though I have some, we are a bit limited with his age. I would love some fellow-geek moms input! So tell me how you incorporate you geek-dome into your family-life and things you and your kids do together. We really enjoy playing Rock Band (my son loves hamming it up with the mic or guitar and banging on the drums).

We also love Rock Band. My son is 10 and we play Puzzlequest against each other and Halo 3 was his first fps game.

We also watch a lot of podcasts together, like the Totally Rad Show and Techzilla. We love to play board and card games too. From Puerto Rico and Monopoly to Munchkin and Killer Bunnies.

We use to watch TechTV but now we watch shows like Jurassic Fight Club and Heroes.

We are looking into also start fencing soon too. It would be good to get a little physical once in a while.
I have three sons (10, 6, and 5). We make games and crafts with recyclables and 'found' things. My oldest son and I are working on a book and have plans for a slam poetry blog. I design Web sites so I'd love for all three of my kids to be Web savvy. For now, we just play lots of computer games on hotwheels.com or pbskids. My youngest has made a 'laptop' out of a busted leapfrog notebook, like a real techhead.
We do most of our homeschooling on the computer, lots of computer classes included for us in homeschooling along with the other core. My son (13) now does "tech support" for his friends often as well, plus he is the go to guy for iPod/iTunes support for everyone we know. We are always repurposing electronics (power supplies, wires, monitors, hard drives, circuit boards, etc.) for new gadgets, inventions, art projects, etc.
We watch thing like the Teaching Company's videos (e.g. "The Joy of Mathematics") for fun. ;>
Our lil wean has no hope of escaping geekdom, she'll have a blog as soon as she's old enough to write and i'll be really sneaky and get her coding by teaching her how to change the template - from there it'll be programming her own java/ vb.net games and mobile apps..

..and the bloke wants to get her into chemistry so it'll be experiment experiment experiment - usually ending in flames and destruction *sigh* thank god the grandmother wants to drag her to the allotment and my best mate wants to teach her music, will round her out a tad eh? ;0p
Aside from Wii (making Miis a household favorite), I recently made an LED birthday cake for my 6yo's science-themed birthday party. The wires were made from edible-silver coated licorice, and there were LEDs on the cake instead of candles. My daughter had a blast completing the circuit and "lighting" her LEDs..

The cake was a hit with both the kids and the parents. However, despite earning a BSEE, this was not as easy as I remembered it to be....
This was my LED cake journey... http://ophiesay.blogspot.com/
Oh my.
Eldest and me luv writing. We bounce ideas off each other. Also drags me thru the latest new anime. I work for the cable company so we get the extra stupid crazy discount. The OnDemand world is our oyster. Also into computers and gaming. He's a cheat-grabber and a code-keyer. If there's a cheat or glitch to be exploited he can do so with delight. Also got him into WoT (ty Diva *mwah*).
With daughter, we chatter about boys/girls/gossip. She's not terribly geeky that one but she does love her music. So I guess the me & her geek would be MP3s and the acquisition of such.
2nd son is a practical thinker-atho u wouldn't know it the way his mouth gets him in trouble. When he was Noggin-age, I encouraged him to tell Steve where Blue's Clue was. He looked at me and said "They can't hear me, Mommy. It'sTV"
Yeh.
So this lil guy plays clarinet. He also likes anime but he isn't allowed to freely scope like his elder (he's only 12 BB is 15-16). He likes tinkering so when I'm tinkering with puters its really hard to keep him out of the way, so I kinda gave up. I try to tinker when he's occupied but he has some kinda 6th sense & keeps catching me. We watch Time warp Trio when we can catch it & each other @ the same time. He also likes watching Discovery/Science/History channels with me -Digging For the Truth, Cities of The Underworld, PaleoWorld, etc . We watch CourtTV together too. He's big into MythBusters, How Its Made, & Dirty Jobs. Hes also a blooming gamer.
The lil guy likes watching the news programs with me: MSNBC has become our fav lately. He's more into the crime shows I watch than 12yo: Foresics Files, The Investigators, North Mission Road, etc. He also likes History and Discovery channel too, but different shows than his older bro. He's a mini-gamer, loves his Lego Star Wars (one & 2 thanks) & Lego Indy, & Sonic.
The teensy chic is a Noggin baby like all three of the youngsters. I don't geek much with her but she puts her other mommy thru the ringer w/Dora, Yo-Gabba-Gabba and Sesame Street online. I do book-geek with her when she pins me down but she's a lil blonde comet most of the time

All-kid geekiness includes spades, Monopoly, Clue, chess, Scrabble, MP3 players & tunes, movies, pop culture review. The boys play Magic & D&D on occasion with our Gryffin...

Wow...that's a lotta geekiness for one household. And that's just the kids...OMGs
I am playing chess with my 4 and 8 years-old daughters. I am not quite sure it is geeky, but people stare at us when we play in a park, so I guess it is. We have fun also playing air drums (i.e. wave sticks in the air to play a virtual reality batterie).

The babies (turned 2 yesterday) love to play with their robot and solve puzzles.
Yesterday my step kids had a dentist appointment. I stated we look like geeks with all three of us each having a book in our arms. My step daughter stated yep I even have my glasses on too!

I dont know if this counts as geeky or not, but these are the things we enjoy doing together:

Playing board games/chess

Doing science experiments (simulation volcano eruption (using soda and baking powder), making rainbows (using mirror, flashlight, nowl of water), simulating rocket launches (baloon, strings)

making paper airplanes

cooking together

gardening together

making cars, boats and other cool stuff using solar kits and other electronic kits

making plans about vacations, making plans about learning some thing new

doing mad minute exercises

:-)
