As adults we are all very familiar with the idea of measurement, and weight, yet, both can be confusing to our children. How do we teach our children to estimate and measure weight? With farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and grocery stores overflowing with pumpkins October is the perfect time to teach measurements.

The pound is the basic unit of weight in the English Customary system, but what, exactly, is a pound? Rowlett (2001) tells us that the grain was the unit on which a pound was built. Seven thousand grains made up a pound in traditional English measurement. Evidently a grain was the weight of a single grain of wheat.

When it comes to learning about measurement and weight it is easier to show a child, than tell them. Take your child pumpkin shopping. Be sure to take a flexible tape measure with you. If you only have a metal measuring tape, be sure to get some string to be used as your measuring tape...keep reading at: http://www.examiner.com/parenting-education-in-national/pumpkins-te...

Little Dresses for Africa is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to distribute dresses to little girls in remote villages of Africa. Nancy's Notions employees are teaming up with this organization to sew and package dresses, then ship them to Africa. You, and your child, can help change lives with these simple projects.

Teaching children to sew with these little dresses is a wonderful opportunity that allows your child to learn new skills while also participating in helping other less fortunate children.

When completed and mailed off to become a grateful little girl in Africa prized possession. Your children have learned a new skill and found their own sense of accomplishment and self esteem.

I bought my material through Nancy's Notions.* The kit cost 24.99 and made 3 dresses, and included the coordinating bias tape. I did have to buy thread and elastic. It took me an afternoon to make all three dresses, it was fun and easy. Or you can down load the instructions at creativekindness.com and use your own fabric or even gently used pillowcases. I am not a seamstress; if this pattern is easy for me I am sure anyone can do it. Keep Reading at: http://www.examiner.com/x-2016-Parenting--Education-Examiner~y2010m...

The Summer Solstice, which occurs on June 21st, is when the sun is at its highest path through the sky and the day is the longest. It marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere and simultaneously begins winter in the southern hemisphere. Because the day is so long the Sun does not rise exactly in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west allowing it to be in the sky for a longer period of time. In 2010, the solstice occurs and summer begins, in the Northern Hemisphere, early on June 21, at 7:28 a.m. EDT

The solstice is due to the tilt of the earth's axis, without it we would have no seasons. The earth spins around

Parents’ Guide to hiking with children
It is time to take all those outdoor hikes that were just dreams in January. If your children are old enough for walks, and hikes this is a special family time. To make it enjoyable for the whole family you may need to slow down to your children's pace, remember they have little legs. Let them set the pace; this is crucial - and be prepared to carry them when they get tired. Enjoy their slower pace, talk and enjoy the view. Give your children their own little pack, and give a minimum of things to carry. A hike may consist of a ½ mile that takes an hour or two, in the beginning.

There are no real rules about hiking with children. As parents, our job is to be sensitive and aware of their energy and attitude, and be ready to make alternate plans at a moments notice. Make hiking goals reasonable. Start early in the day when everyone is well rested. Keep them fed and hydrated. Some children love to travel on foot; some will dawdle looking at rocks and flowers along the way. Keep Reading at: http://www.examiner.com/x-2016-Parenting--Education-Examiner~y2010m...

Time for Backyard Science Family Fun
With warm days and evenings it is time for families to step into their backyard and spend a little or as much time as they have investigating seeds, plants, animals, and insects. You will need to help children become conscious of the vulnerability and strength of life. As they step out into the backyard and decide what aspects of life they want to study, invite them to suggest how they can "handle everything with care."

First your children will need tools for observation and comparison such as used standard and nonstandard measuring devices;

In 1907, Anna M Jarvis, to ease her grief, proposed and then organized an annual remembrance for her mother who had passed on into loving memory. It was a special memorial service that was to honor her mother with five hundred carnations-her mother's favorite flower-made into corsages.

Miss Jarvis worked, for the next seven years, to create a national holiday honoring mothers. On May 8, 1914 Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May "Mother's Day," urging an annual "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."

Very quickly the day became a commercial event. Anna Jarvis spent the rest of her life fighting the commercialism of this holiday that was so dear to her heart. She wrote countless letters, articles and pamphlets arguing that the holiday had been intended to inspire thoughtful, loving gestures-"through some distinct act of kindness, visit, letter, a gift or tribute to show remembrance of the mother to whom general affection is due."

Although Mother's day ended up disappointing Anna Jarvis, she did give us a beautiful day full of reflection. Keep Reading at: http://www.examiner.com/x-2016-Parenting--Education-Examiner~y2010m...
