In addition to cooking for our kids, this summer I'm trying kids cooking for our family. The plan is for my boys to cook one dinner each week. They pick the recipe, give me a shopping list and then cook the meal. We're in week one and the first meal my nine year old son selected was sub sandwiches and banana splits. I rounded it out with broccoli and it was a great meal. He was so proud of what he made.

Has anyone tried this? Since it's summer my kids should have extra time to help out and learn new skills.

Thanks for this...I agree it's great to get the kids in the kitchen.  I used to have my children take turns planning menus - and as they learned more about cooking, they also would plan the menu and cook one dinner each week.  It was great.  Now they are out on their own and cook regularly for themselves, roommates and friend.

Having our kids plan menus & cook is an awesome idea to get them involved. My mom keeps telling my 2 teen boys that a woman likes a man who cooks! Now that my oldest is driving, I'm having him drive his brother to the store to do the shopping for the meals they planned, too!

Rosey, Enjoy wathcing your boys learn by doing. It's a great experience!

My girls help almost every day in the kitchen. Some times it is simply packing lunches from foods I have helped prep but other times they get to play a major role. They are both too young to read so I do most of the menu planning. That said, I do take them with me to the store and they get to help shop. On occasion I have had them look at pictures in cookbooks and make selections.
