Definitely, there are times when you want to cry, scream or just generally tear your hair out but when you can see the funny sides of childhood it gets you through. Thinking about what they are thinking, getting down on to their level is the best way - my Mom always says that she wishes we were kids again, it was the happiest time of her life, so cling on to every moment.

As a Grandmother of 6, with four adult children...and now raising a 9 year old with autism, if I hadn't kept my sense of humor, I'd have run away from home a long time ago! Sometimes it can really be hard to find the "funny" when the kiddos are raising caine and I find myself looking outside to see if there's a full moon. Those times I remind myself that what you can't laugh at will probably kill ya, so if ya can't laugh just grit yer teeth and grin real big...it might just scare them enough to make em quit for awhile....LOL

I think humor is a great stress reliever. And if the kids aren't making me laugh, I look for it somewhere else. Watching a funny show (The Office, 30 Rock) or reading a funny book is one of my favorite things to do to chill out.

One day I was on the phone and my then 2-year-old son started yelling. (why does everything always happen when you are on the phone?) He came running out of the bathroom and had the new kiddie "potty seat" which I got so he could safely sit on the big boy potty without falling in - stuck around his neck! Yes, it helps to laugh. With a little prying we were able to get the potty toilet seat over his head.
I won't even get into the time he wrapped himself in an entire box of floss - when he was naked!

We have a family theme song. It's the circus theme song. There are many times at home and especially in public..or in the car... pretty much everywhere... when the baby is crying....the toddler is screaming...the 5 yr old is yelling and hitting....the 9 year old is covering his ears and yelling "mom, Noah won't be quiet", "mom, zac won't move his arm off of me", "papa, why do I have to sit in the middle?","ewe, ethan's picking his nose!"...and a 12 year old whining like a baby cause we asked him to help. This is when one of us starts whistling or humming the Circus song. It makes us all start singing and pretty soon laughing together. It helps break the tension and lightens the mood. =)

Car rides are always and adventure. I remember one time, all five were in the car along with my husband and myself heading to an imposed "family" get together when my daughter started yelling at my youngest. We of course asked what could he possibly be doing in his car seat that was so horrible that she needed to yell at him like that...her response? "He's breathing!!!!" She was only 5. This was responded to with gails of laughter from all except for the pouting little girl.
We found Joshua Giraffe by Raffi was always a good yelling match break up song.
Aren't big families the best??? I wouldn't trade my big family for anything.

Laughter, DEFINITELY! I have three children and a Marley-type dog and was raised in a family of seven. It is purely comical now when we get together and reminisce about growing up. I am trying to recreate that too in my parenting style. My kids just crack me up on a daily basis. Life is too short to take things too seriously, and when we can model that for our kids it teaches them stress relief in our crazy world:)

Absolutely! I was always taught that in general, you need to laugh to make it through life. Now with kids, that is even more true, especially on the days where you wonder if you will make it!
To help me laugh, I started blogging a couple months ago. I am able to laugh with (and at) myself and my journey through motherhood.

my day, calling a plumber to say we have half a box of tampons clogging the toilet. they appearantly did not tell him why he was there and felt the need to show me. I DO NOT THINK SO, I AM NOT THREE. then my wonderful 4 year old had a bowel movement in the bathtub for the second time in a week. then my son texted me 20 times to come to his room after being sent to bed for acting up. he then did not call the home phone and answer it and bring it to me saying it was a friend to get me to talk to him

It is better to laugh than get angry. Here is a situation than happen when my son was young.
My son was 7 years old ( he has ADHD) and his room was a disaster. I told him to clean his room or I was going to get rid of everything. I walked him to his room and said " I want to be able to walk from this door to your bed, so get this room cleaned up or I am going to throw everything in the trash." So after about 45 minutes he came into the living room and said okay momma it is done. I went to see and could not help but laugh, he had pushed everything to the sides and had made me a path from the door to his bed. He took my word literally. I would walk from the door to his bed. So then I learned to be more exact, I went in his room with him then and told him where to put everything.
