I would start at Blogger on Google or WordPress. They are pretty easy to create on either platform. I use blogger and had no idea where to begin, but it was easy to muddle through.

I started with Blogger. It was free and as Sara mentioned before, you can muddle through well enough. It does have a little bit of a learning curve, but you can sign up and get started and it costs you nothing but time. I had a lot of fun learning how to do it and picking templates, designs, etc. I think Google offers a fair amount of help to get going. You can do it!!! Just dive on in!

well the easiest way is to start with blogger.com. Its free yet professional and theres tons of tools to build your blog.
blogspot is good. I use my own computer and use my iweb software. I also like wix. The charity I work with theteenedge.com. We used wix.
Best of luck

I use Blogger but have my own customised domain name.

I'm not very good with technology but I've had no problems with Blogger

Here's a response I added to the forums of one of the sites I write for. In response to how to monetize a blog, also good tips for starting your own blog. All the blogging platforms I've used; Wordpress, Blogger and Typepad are really easy to use. You don't need to know any programming.

There are lots of ways to monetize your blogs. I've used both Blogger/Blogspot, Typepad and Wordpress to host my blogs. Right now most of my blogs are on Typepad.

Here are a few ways I get a steady stream of income coming in:

1. Place Google Adsense ads on the blogs.

2. If your blog is hosted by Typepad, you can sign up to have their Six Apart Media ads placed on your blog.

3. Set up Amazon affiliate links. For example, if I'm doing a review on a running shoe, I'll place a few affiliate links to running shoes at the end of the blog post.

4. Sign up to be an affiliate for products that complement your blog. For example on my Bike Diva and Run Diva blogs, I have affiliate links for Hammer Nutrition, Fluid Recovery Drink, Road ID and similar companies.

5. My Bike Diva blog currently has a Google Pagerank of 4 - so I'm starting to get individual companies contacting me about sending me free product to review for the blog or even asking about advertising on the blog. Free product can be a great perk, you just have to mention in your blog posts or somewhere on your blog that you received free product.

Last year, an athletic clothing company sent me $1,400 worth of free clothing, yes $1,400 - that's almost as good as being a sponsored athlete! Another athletic clothing company recently sent me $700 worth of running clothing - AWESOME! I also contact companies directly and ask for media samples to review for the various sites I write for. I've gotten books, DVD;s, running shoes, cycling clothing, running clothing, sports nutrition products, heart monitors, cycle computers and more sent to me - nice perk!

6. I designed a logo for my Bike Diva blog and setup a Cafe Press store selling merchandise with the BD logo. My next step is to look into to ordering certain logo items in bulk, such as water bottles and/or tote bags, and offering these for sale on my website, probably through a Paypal payment link option. Cafe Press items are pretty $$ so I don't make that much $$ on sales through their site.

Get a Domain Name

For my Typepad blogs, I purchased my domain names from Go Daddy, so instead of each blog being something like www.typepad.com/bikediva that blog is www.bikediva.net. Domain names are not very expensive - well worth the investment to get your own domain name.

Chose Your Blog Platform

About a year ago I moved the Bike Diva blog from Wordpress.com to Typepad. Saw about a 50% reduction in traffic. Worth moving blog in the long run, but when I first did it I was YIKES! That blog is back up to pagerank 4, so I'm happy I made the change. I have 7 Typepad blogs, just the platform I decided to go with. Wordpress.com was fine, but couldn't place ads on the blog. Typepad gave me a 90 day free trial to try out their system. I was also reluctant to switch to Wordpress.org to monetize my blogs. Seemed too complicated for my peanut brain, but other writers say they have no problems using it.

I also have a couple of Blogger/blogspot blogs, but I don't really post up information to them anymore. And they never seemed to generate that much income compared to my other blogs. But lots of people use Blogger and love it.

Blog for Others?

Before I got my own domain names, started my own blogs, I started blogging for Orble.com. They are a revenue share program. I have my The Pagan Path and I Love Herbs on their blog network. Those blogs have been around for a couple of years and get pretty good page views/revenue. So I still write for those blogs even though I only get a share of the revenue - they generate a pretty good amount of income.

So if you aren't sure about starting your own blog, their are lots of sites, such as Orble that you could write for. I also used to have a blog on Today.com, but they changed their revenue sharing program so I stopped writing for them.

Take care,
Lynn

Thanks for all the posts...I want to start a blog too and this information was very helpful :)
Hey there - if you all email me at michelle@michellesiscopr.com I may be able to help. I do a blog of sorts (it's more of a community based website for parents) for Macaronikid.com. Mine is the Georgia/Smyrna Vinings edition. Check iti out. You can also see what other communities already have publishers. But I'm on a mission to find more publisher moms! They make it so easy because everything is set up for you, you just enter the info. And you really can make money from ad sales, tie in with local theatres, etc. for event tickets. It's a lot of fun.
YAY!! Good for you! You will love it...I would recommend starting with Blogger. It's free, it allows you room to play and get used to the format. I would also recommend having at least a week of blog posts ready to go so that you don't feel stressed to write while trying to change things, learn and reach readers. Good luck and let me know when you are set up!!

Hi D'Anna! Nice to "see" you here! Lots of great advice... I'm a Wordpress fan myself. Like someone said below, all it costs is your time -- and lots of trial and error. Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions... xo
