we started early, she is now 7, and has her own allowance, she scans the sale ads with me, uses coupons to get the most for her $$..she has more stocks and savings than hubby & I do...sad, but TRUE!!

I have a post up for today on another topic already, but this is a hot topic for me! I have friends whose children had bank accounts and knew how to write checks in elementary school. I make a big deal about my son's helping me hold the coupons, and he regularly gives coins in our church offering. (He even received a tax statement for those contributions!) Since he is a toddler, I like to talk to him about the benefits he receives through our money. For example, when he is sad because daddy is at work, we talk about how that work supports us in what we need. He accompanies me to the bank once a month to get the cash that we need for the month, and puts most of the change we accumulate into a counter jar. Next week, I'll be taking our heavy jar to the bank to deposit for a family vacation weekend. I can't wait to see what he thinks about the result of his efforts to put those coins where they belong! Thanks to Raquel for the prompt!

Let us know if you end up writing about it. We'd love to hear more!

Ok, so I finally made it in as a member (well, maybe not finally  - there were 3 responses in my spam folder, but I did check it I swear). Here's my comment:

Interesting topic.  I have recently started introducing my 3 year old daughter to the concept of money and that we use money to purchase the things we want and need.  When we go to the store she gets to bring any dollar bills that her Gramma has sent her for holidays, etc, and if she sees something she wants we discuss how much they are and if she has enough and if she really wants it.  Of course, now she calls dollars "tickets" and thinks we use tickets to buy stuff, but it is the thinking process that we are encouraging with her.  So tickets we have and tickets we spend :)

The best way to teach children about money is to be a good example. Let them see you paying your bills and investing wisely. A post from the past on the topic: Money and your Child. Fridays are dedicated to finance on my blog so stop by and join us.

We have kind of a unique money situation because all 3 of our kids work and obviously a percentage goes into coogan accounts which they are aware of although only my 12 year old actually understands it. My oldest (12) gets a portion of his earned money to do what he likes with so if he wants something he has to save etc. He also has to donate to a cause of his choice, he choses the amount but he does very well and I think he has a firm understanding of what he is doing. We also don't buy him toys (for the most part) unless its a holiday etc. All of our kids have pretty much everything they could want so other then an a holiday if they are at the store etc and see a toy they want the have to buy it themselves. I think this has helped to teach them that when they spend it they run out. Even my 4 year old seems to do very well with this when it's her money, she too gets a portion just like her brother. The baby not so much she still wants what she wants and we get it for her but as she gets older just like the others she will be the same. We have started to teach our 4 year old about donating but she's still not old enough to decide what goes where so we help her but make sure she is the one doing it so she see's where it goes.

I started talking to them about money ever since they could talk.  My girls, ages 5 and 7, are now wise shoppers and spenders.  In fact, they save most of the money they receive.

Early on... how you treat money is their first education. There's a great kid's educational game site that teaches kids about money while learning other subjects too. They earn Moola and get a virtual bank account. The REALLY cool part that teaches them about deposits, debits, and credits is the online prize auction where they can redeem their Moola for REAL prizes. They learn to earn, save and use their Moola to buy things they want. It's free to play and acquire Moola and view the prize auction. Enjoy teaching kids everything from safety habits, math, geography, and math. (http://tuki.com/cmd.php?af=1397451)
